José Iturbi (28 November 1895 in Valencia, Spain 28 June 1980, Los Angeles) was a Spanish conductor and pianist of Basque descent. He studied with and made his American debut in New York City in 1929, he also appeared in several Hollywood films of the 1940s. He often appeared in concert with his sister , who was also a renowned pianist.

As a child Iturbi was one of my favorites--I had a recording of his performance of the Beethoven piano concerto in in c minor on 78s with the Bach c minor fantasy as a filler--impeccable playing and conducting as in this Liszt concerto . What can be done to revive this great pianist musician's reputation. His appearances in Hollywood films preserves some of his genius but in a compromised setting although he did the piano playing for the (Cornell Wilde) Chopin autobiography.

Already the opening is distinctive;Iturbi wants an extra rythmic,almost clipped,dry interaction of piano/orch.The forwardly-balanced piano gives a bassy punch,almost too much;i confess the tender,confiding aspect is a bit lacking in the lyrical themes.It's amazingly modern,cleaned-up Liszt,well worth a hearing and confirming my view of Iturbi as one of the greatest,naturally brilliant pianists ever,and a most remarkable musician.
