Review by Rudy Langlet

Má Vlast Bedřich Smetana by Karel Ančerl and The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra is a stunning album that showcases the beauty and power of Czech classical music. The album features Smetana's masterpiece, Má Vlast, a collection of six symphonic poems that celebrate the Czech landscape, history, and culture.

Ančerl's interpretation of Má Vlast is nothing short of masterful. He brings out the nuances and subtleties of each piece, highlighting the intricate melodies and lush harmonies that make Smetana's music so captivating. The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, too, delivers a flawless performance, with each section playing with precision and passion.

One of the highlights of the album is the opening piece, Vltava (The Moldau), which captures the flowing beauty of the river that runs through Prague. Ančerl and the orchestra create a sense of motion and momentum that is both exhilarating and serene. The other pieces on the album, such as Šárka and Blaník, are equally impressive, each one telling a different story and evoking a different mood.

This is a wonderful interpretation! You can feel the energy and imagine the players sitting on the edges of their chairs. Very clean, articulate playing. You can tell that the musicians and Ancerl grew up with this music and played it like it is second nature . The best interpretation I have come across.
This is magical!!!!

Sadly, only months after conducting this, the greatest Czech musical work, he went to exile after the Prague Spring was crushed, never to return to his homeland again

I chose to comment on this 1968 Ančerl performance because one defeated revolution is enough (Battle of White Mountain, 1620). Does anyone know where Smetana got the melodic theme (so-do'-do'-re'-do'-re'-do' so-re'-re'-mi'-fa'-so'-do' ... mi-so-so'-re mi'- so'-do'-mi' minute 40:36) that he weaves together with "Kdož jste Boži Bojovníci
