I bought this album from a random record store based on the picture on the back. All those panels and leads! I was looking for something different and I certainly found it. I also have a very rare copy of The Planets which was pulled because the Holst family objected to Tomitas interpretation.

Modest Mussorgsky was the original composer of Pictures at an exhibition and I could not get enough of it as a child. Under such circumstances it is rare indeed to like someone else's interpretation of it. No "like" is the wrong word. I should have said LOVE. This was the first time I heard anything by Kitaro and I felt mesmerized again and again and again. I still do. Thank you Musorgsky and thank you Tomita!

This synthy reinterpretation of Russian classical is very proto-dungeon synth. I think Varg used to say some of the Russian classical composers were an influence. Jim Kirkwood was very notably influenced by 70s krautrock and kosmiche music. Makes me wonder if this isn't the missing link between classical/baroque music and dungeon synth.

A former friend of mine had this in his collection and didn’t know it because he got a random batch of records from a library. When I visited him once he said I should feel free to browse through his records. I found this and was surprised that he had it and I played it. His reaction: “This is not music, what kind of rubbish is that?” Unfortunately I had no record player, he wanted to give the record to me… I should have taken it…

If this version of "The Great Gate of Kiev" doesn't leave you breathless, consult your physician. You may have died. First heard this album in the 80s. Blew me away then, continues to do so every time I hear it.
