« L'énorme succès populaire qu'ont connu quelques unes des œuvres de Rachmaninov au cours de sa vie ne durera probablement pas... "C'est ce qu'écrit l'éminente critique Rosa Newmarch (1857-1940), dans une mise à jour de son éditeur, Eric Blom. Avant de rire de la naïveté (ou du manque de jugement) de Mme Newmarch (ou du Dr Blom ?), nous devrions peut-être nous rappeler que le triomphe populaire posthume de Rachmaninov a presque "entièrement" dépendu des deuxième et troisième concertos pour piano et de la Rhapsodie sur un thème de Paganini : trois opus pour un total de quarante-cinq opus.

Il y a un danger à considérer les quatre concertos comme quatre vues d'un même paysage : l'une des vertus d'une édition collectée comme le présent enregistrement est qu'il permet de découvrir, sous le manteau des moeurs 'rachmaninoviennes' qui est en quelque sorte commun à tous les concertos, des événements musicaux très différents qui se déroulent.

Le troisième concerto est probablement la plus aboutie des cinq œuvres pour piano et orchestre de Rachmaninov, mais toutes les cinq oeuvres peuvent révéler à l'auditeur attentif bien plus qu'un simple compositeur qui avait une technique pianistique inégalable et une façon mémorable de l'accorder. Avec le deuxième concerto, c'est le deuxième mouvement qui a connu un succès dévastateur. Il a été joué à trois reprises à la demande du public lors de la première, avant que le concerto ne s'achemine vers sa conclusion hargneuse et glorieuse... (09:22)

Earl Wild est un pianiste de la grande tradition romantique. Considéré par beaucoup comme le dernier des grands pianistes romantiques, cet éminent musicien est connu internationalement comme l'un des derniers d'une longue lignée de grands pianistes/compositeurs virtuoses. Souvent salué comme un super virtuose et l'un des plus grands pianistes du XXe siècle, Earl Wild est une figure légendaire qui se produit dans le monde entier depuis plus de huit décennies.

Au cours de sa longue carrière, M. Wild a reçu de nombreuses récompenses. Il a été inclus dans la série de Philips Records intitulée The Great Pianists of the 20th Century avec un double disque consacré exclusivement aux transcriptions pour piano. Il a été présenté dans le magazine TIME à deux reprises ; la dernière fois, en décembre 2000, à l'occasion de son quatre-vingt-cinquième anniversaire. M. Wild est l'un des rares pianistes vivants à mériter une entrée dans le New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, où il est décrit comme un pianiste dont la technique "est capable d'englober avec une apparente facilité même les œuvres virtuoses les plus difficiles".

I grew up listening to Earl Wild’s rendition of the concerti and rhapsody…still probably the best set out there!

Musica incomparabile, di rara bellezza per armonia e merlodia uniche al mondo. Rachmaninov è senza dubbio un compositore di grandissima levatura che affascina e incanta, soprattutto i romantici. MERAVIGLIOSO!!!

I've listened to these performances again and I guess I don't get it. They are played without much emotional involvement, just rushed through. I have two CDs of him playing Chopin and Rachmaninov they are similar fast perfunctory performances.
Compare these with Rachmaninov's own performances, you hear them on YouTube also.
It's too bad Josef Hofmann didn't perform and them, the 3rd was dedicated to him but he didn't like it.

谢谢YouTube 不断给我古典音乐，我也是一九四五年出生我上小学就看老师弹钢琴，但只有有錢人家才拥有，我家贫穷真会练纲琴我八一年到香港但不知有古典台那時我护理老人得了腰椎病那時是九八年做手术要躺床上在苦闷当中在收音机发现有港古典台这样我迷注了一整天听港古典音乐，能起床活动后去买光盘听，参加古典台的遊戲活动，采题我总是第一个打电话主要可得到奖品有光盘和给古典音乐票。所以我不断听古典音乐也参加音乐群学会分享作品！感谢上帝给我音乐感，感谢所有在音乐群的乐友屡我年龄最大。

My favourite version of these concerti. Ardent, voluptuous, grandiose, incredibly singing. The orchestra is lava and the piano crystal sparkling.

Earl Wild's Rakh 3 started me at age 13 on a life-long quest to collect recordings of this magnificent and dramatic music. Thirty-plus years, and many, many convincing and electrifying interpretations later, only Sgouros' recording moves me as much as Wild's. Thank you for posting this.
