Review by Rodi Kman

Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra Featuring Jimmy Dorsey has released an album titled "Marie My Friend The Ghost," which is a delightful collection of swing and jazz tunes. The album features some of the most popular tracks from the 1920s and 30s, including "Marie," "Stardust," and "The Dipsy Doodle."

The album showcases the incredible talent of the Dorsey brothers, who were known for their exceptional musicianship and ability to create memorable melodies. Tommy Dorsey's trombone playing is particularly impressive, and he shines on tracks like "The Dipsy Doodle" and "Song of India." Jimmy Dorsey's saxophone work is equally impressive, and his solos on "Stardust" and "Marie" are simply breathtaking.

The album also features some excellent vocal performances, with contributions from Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and the Pied Pipers. Sinatra's rendition of "Marie" is a standout track, and his smooth vocals perfectly complement the orchestra's lush arrangements.

About Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra Featuring Jimmy Dorsey

Orchestra under the leading of Tommy Dorsey, formed in 1935 and disbanded a first time in 1946. By late 1946, the band business was indeed having problems. In December 1946, some members of the band (including Tommy Dorsey) were calling it quits. However, less than two years later, he formed an orchestra with exactly the same name (Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra), but with different members. Dorsey's orchestra was known primarily for its renderings of ballads at dance tempos, frequently with singers such as Jack Leonard and Frank Sinatra.

I like the 1937 version okay, but this one is so much better!!! Having all the trumpets playing the trumpet solo is awesome!!! It sounds like a huge brass wall of sound that gives me goose bumps every time I here it...My wife and I would always go and see the orchestra when they were within a 100 miles back when Buddy Morrow was leading them, and the trumpet part in Marie was the highlight of the evening for me! That was the swinginest band I ever heard live! Buddy Morrow on lead trombone...Damon Gilbert on trumpet...and Walt Andrus on the vocals...what could possibly go wrong with those guys?
Stuff like this is what makes me sad that Glenn Miller died in the war...just imagine what he would have re-recorded in his library, or what new stuff he might have done!!! With his keen sense for business I think we would have seen him on television instead of Lawrence Welk!!!

Just watched the Honeymooners New Yrs.Eve faturing the Dorsey Bros. And Gordon Polk sang Ain't She Sweet. I really got a kick out of his unique comic style singing. Decided to look him up and came across this gem! I love it..Thanks so much!
